A determinate variety with fruit similar to that of the Bush Beefsteak. The round fruit is blood-red in color, and its weight ranges from 120 to 180 grams. The fruits are beefsteak-type, fleshy, and low in juice. Given the size of the fruits, this variety is excellent for preserves (e.g., pickled tomatoes or tomatoes in jelly? :) ). However, the uses of this variety are not limited to that: the plants bear fruit consistently—they have low soil requirements, are short in stature (not exceeding 40 cm), and the fruit is resistant to cracking. These are just the most important advantages of the New Yorker; we must also add its high yield and excellent transportability, which make it well-suited for commercial cultivation. The short growing season is another excellent feature of this variety; with a period of just 63 days to the first harvest, it will thrive not only in our climate but even further north in Europe.

New Yorker was developed at the Geneva Experimental Station in New York State as part of R. Robinson’s breeding program. It was among the varieties that helped popularize the cultivation of short, determinate field tomatoes in the northeastern United States. Its early maturity and compact growth habit were very practical there: they allowed for a good harvest during a shorter growing season.
