Honey Drop is a modern heirloom variety, developed in the USA as an open, freely available selection within the OSSI (Open Source Seed Initiative) program. It originates from efforts to “dehybridize” cherry varieties such as SunSugar, with the goal of achieving a plant of equally sweet flavor but greater stability, reduced cracking, and better tolerance to variable weather conditions. Thanks to these qualities, it quickly gained popularity among gardeners and seed collectors and today is considered one of the most interesting golden cherry varieties available for home cultivation.
The plant is tall (indeterminate) and requires staking. It produces regular leaves and grows vigorously, setting abundant clusters of fruit throughout the season until frost. The first harvests begin about 65–70 days after transplanting, making Honey Drop an early variety within its class.
The fruits are small cherry tomatoes, round, weighing 15–20 g. Their color is unique: shades of honey-gold, salmon, and sometimes orange, often with a delicate sheen. The flavor deserves special recognition — intensely sweet, fruity, with a grape-like note and exceptional juiciness. The flesh is delicate, the skin thin, yet much less prone to cracking than in many other yellow cherry varieties.
Honey Drop is a tomato that excels in salads, as a snack, in Mediterranean-style dishes, and in colorful cherry assortments with red or dark varieties. In the garden, it delights with its unusual color and abundant yields, while in the kitchen it offers an unmistakable, “honeyed” flavor.
Compared to other varieties available at Pomidorlandia, Honey Drop stands out with its pure dessert profile and cultivation reliability. When compared to the classic Sun Gold, it offers equally sweet flavor, but in a variety free from patent restrictions and less prone to cracking. In assortments with red types like Sweet Aperitif or dark ones like Black Cherry, Honey Drop adds color diversity and a contrasting taste profile.
This is a variety that combines honey-like sweetness, stable yields, and open-source seed status — making it one of the most sought-after modern heirloom cherry tomatoes.
