Lutescent Long Red is an unusual tomato variety, distinguished by its low chlorophyll content, which causes the leaves to have a straw-yellow hue throughout the growing season. It is one of the varieties introduced to the market by Alexander Livingston in 1897, originally known as Honor Bright. Today, both varieties function in parallel, and there are sufficient differences between them that they are no longer combined. What makes this variety so unique is its fascinating ripening process - the fruits go through different color phases: initially green, then white-waxy, then lemon-yellow, and finally reaching an intense red color.
This variety has medium-sized fruits that are spherical and juicy, weighing from 110 to 300 grams. They are extremely aromatic, and thanks to their resistance to cracking and long storage time, they are great for transport and storage. The plant is tall, with regular leaves, and requires tying. This late-season variety is perfect for gardeners looking for a unique, visually appealing tomato.
Lutescent Long Red has an interesting history, having been discovered as a “sport” in a field of Livingston’s Stone. The variety was resurrected in 2005 by renowned seed collector Craig LeHoullier, who worked with Seeds of Diversity Canada to ensure the survival of this unique variety.
