Kanner Hoel—sometimes listed in collections as Kanner Hoell—is a red, fleshy tomato with a mild flavor and low acidity. In our garden, the fruits are about 10–13 cm in diameter and weigh up to half a kilogram.
Its history was preserved by a donor to the Seed Savers Exchange, Reverend C. Frank Morrow of Minnesota. In the letter accompanying the seeds, he wrote that the variety originated in Germany and has been in his family since 1916. It is precisely such family traditions that allow heirloom varieties to find their way into new gardens.
The tall plant requires support. The fruits ripen about 80 days after the seedlings are planted and are well suited for sandwiches and preserves.
