Thessaloniki is a traditional heirloom variety from Greece, introduced into wider cultivation in the 1950s by the American seed company Glecklers Seedsmen. Bred at experimental agricultural stations in Thessaloniki, it quickly earned recognition for its reliability and resilience in challenging climates. To this day it remains one of the most valued tomatoes of southern origin, appreciated both in Greece and beyond.

The plant is tall (indeterminate) with regular leaves, characterized by vigorous growth and good foliage cover that protects the fruits from sunscald. Its habit makes staking easy and ensures long, even production throughout the season.

The fruits are red, round, and smaller than those of many other heirlooms, with smooth skin and exceptional resistance to mechanical damage or cracking. As a result, they are always visually attractive while remaining practical for harvest and transport. The flesh is firm and juicy, offering a harmonious, classic tomato flavor — a balanced combination of sweetness and gentle acidity.

Among other varieties available at Pomidorlandia, Thessaloniki stands out for outstanding reliability. Compared with popular cultivars such as Stupice or Slava, it produces fruits that are more damage-resistant and keep their freshness longer. When set against larger heart-shaped or beefsteak types, it excels with its smaller, practical size and higher yield stability.

This is an ideal tomato for those seeking a robust, stable variety of southern origin that delivers dependable harvests even in hot, dry summers. Thessaloniki combines the tradition of Greek horticulture with practical traits that perform well under a wide range of conditions.
