Green Giant
is a unique green tomato variety that originates from Germany and was introduced to wider cultivation thanks to Reinhard Kraft. The plants are indeterminate, which means they grow tall (even over 2 meters) and require sturdy support. A distinctive feature of this variety is its potato-like leaves and large fruits, which can weigh from 300 grams to as much as 900 grams.
The fruits are light green in color and take on a slightly amber hue when fully ripe. Their flesh is meaty and juicy, with a unique, sweet melon-like flavor that is very well balanced. Green Giant is one of the best varieties of green tomatoes, particularly prized for its tenderness and aroma, making it an ideal choice for salads and for eating raw.
This variety ripens late, about 85โ90 days after transplanting, and the fruits are very delicate and bruise easily; they are also prone to cracking, which means you must water them regularly to prevent the soil from drying out for extended periods. This drawback is offset by their outstanding flavor and creamy tenderness.

Reinhard Kraft selected this variety from among green-fruited tomato seedlings, noting its unusual potato-like leaf. In 2004, he passed the seeds on to Craig LeHoullier, who helped spread them further. This is an example of a selection process in which the shape of the leaves was the key initial indicator of distinctiveness.
