“I see it in black”—but this time, it’s a preview of an exceptionally colorful harvest! In this set, you’ll find 10 varieties of tomatoes from the indigo group. Their defining feature is their skin, which takes on shades ranging from navy-purple to nearly black when exposed to sunlight. The intensity of the coloration depends on the variety and growing conditions. The dark pigment overlays the fruit’s base color, creating unusual spots, streaks, and contrasts. It’s a feast for the eyes—and once ripe, a feast for the palate as well.
This effect is caused by anthocyanins—natural pigments from the flavonoid group, also found in blueberries and blackberries, among others. Do they ward off evil spirits and cure warts? We don’t make such promises. But they can certainly chase away the boredom of the tomato patch quite effectively!
We know that choosing from all our indigo varieties can be difficult, which is why, as always, we’re here to help. We’ve selected a cross-section of this extraordinary group for you: small and large fruits, in various shapes and color combinations, and above all—beautiful and delicious. This set will let you discover the many facets of indigo and find your own favorites.
Tip: A dark skin doesn’t necessarily mean the tomato is ripe. Also watch for changes in the color of the uncolored part of the fruit and whether it’s getting softer.
