Even the tomato can bear witness to history, especially when it is a strain as old as Purple Calabash. US President Thomas Jefferson describes them in his notes. He lists them as typical for Virginia home gardens. Jefferson grew his own tomatoes of this type in his garden in Monticello from his first summer retirement in 1809 until his death. Currently, this variety is on display at the Thomas Jeffersons Horticultural Gardens in Monticello as one of the exhibits.
