Vegetative phase

The vegetative phase is the period of development prior to the onset of reproduction, during which the plant primarily develops roots, stems, and leaves. These organs form the assimilation system necessary for the subsequent nourishment of the fruit. After flowering begins, the tomato continues to develop its vegetative parts simultaneously with the flowers and fruits. Excess nitrogen or overwatering does not prolong the phase itself, but can cause vigorous growth and a predominance of vegetative growth at the expense of fruit set.
