Varietal Genetics

The genetics of a variety encompass all the traits encoded in the tomato’s genetic material. These genetics determine, among other things, the plant’s growth habit, yield, flavor, fruit size, ripening time, and resistance to certain diseases. Growing conditions can affect the appearance of the plants and the yield, but they do not alter their genetic material. Good agricultural practices merely allow the potential encoded in the genes to be fully realized.
