Soil drainage

Drainage refers to the soil’s ability to remove excess water. Tomatoes do not tolerate prolonged waterlogging of their roots, so they grow best in well-drained, humus-rich, and well-aerated soils. Proper drainage significantly reduces the risk of soil-borne diseases. If water remains on the surface for a long time after rain or watering, it’s a good idea to improve the soil structure before planting or to use a raised bed or a container with drainage.
