Humus

Humus is the most stable component of humus formed during the decomposition of organic matter. It improves soil structure, increases the soil’s ability to retain water and nutrients, and provides a habitat for a vast number of beneficial microorganisms. A high humus content is one of the characteristics of fertile soil. Humus content builds up gradually through the application of mature compost, leaving the soil under mulch, and minimizing excessive disturbance of the soil.
