Side shoots (suckers)

Side shoots grow from the leaf axils between the stem and the petiole. In tall-growing varieties, they are usually removed to direct more assimilates to the developing fruit. In self-terminating varieties, some of the side shoots are left in place because clusters also form on them. Regular removal of side shoots improves air circulation and makes it easier to train the plants.
