Assimilates

Assimilates are organic compounds produced during photosynthesis, primarily sugars. They are transported from the leaves to the fruits, roots, flowers, and young shoots, where they serve as a source of energy and building material. The more efficiently photosynthesis proceeds, the more assimilates are transferred to the developing fruits. Their quantity has a direct impact on yield, sugar content, and the flavor of tomatoes. A lack of light, leaf damage, or severe disease infestation significantly reduce the production of assimilates.
