Shoot apex (growing point)
Also known as: growing tip
The growing point (apex) is a small area of meristematic tissue located at the tip of a shoot or root. The shoot apex produces new above-ground parts, including leaves, stem segments, and inflorescences, while the root apex produces tissues that enable root growth. Damage to the main shoot apical meristem inhibits its elongation and usually stimulates the development of lateral shoots.
