Removing Side Shoots

Removing side shoots, known as “wolves,” involves eliminating shoots that grow from the leaf axils. This practice directs more assimilates to the developing fruit, improves airflow, and makes it easier to train the plants. For tall-growing varieties, this is done regularly throughout the season. It should not be done automatically on self-terminating varieties; it is best to remove unnecessary shoots when they are small, during dry weather.
