Open Flower

An open flower is one whose corolla petals are fully expanded and which is ready for natural pollination. However, it is not the best maternal material for controlled crossing, as self-pollination may have already occurred. For crossing, a properly developed, still-closed bud is selected; the anther cone is removed before pollen is released; pollen from the selected variety is applied; and the flower is then marked and protected.
