Evaporation
Also known as: evaporation of water from the soil
Evaporation refers to the process of water vaporizing directly from the surface of the soil or substrate. It should not be confused with transpiration, which is the loss of water through leaves. Excessive evaporation causes the soil to dry out more quickly and increases plants’ need for watering. Mulching and improving soil structure effectively reduce water loss.
