Amana Orange brings a vibrant orange color and large, fleshy slices to the plate. These “beefsteak” tomatoes, weighing 400–900 g, have a delicate skin and juicy flesh. Its sweetness is balanced by a pleasant tangy note, which is why this tomato tastes great on its own as well as with olive oil, basil, or mild cheese.

The name traces back to Amana, Iowa. In a published account by Gary Staley, who named it, the variety is linked to his work for Amana Refrigeration and his fondness for the local communities there. It’s an interesting memento of a personal fascination, preserved through seed exchange.

This is a tall variety that requires a sturdy stake or support with string. It’s best to plant it in a warm, sunny spot and support its heavy clusters. For lovers of large orange tomatoes, we also recommend comparing it with “Kellog's Breakfast.”

Gary Staley contributed ‘Amana Orange’ to the Seed Savers Exchange yearbook in 1985.
