New Big Dwarf is a variety bred in the early 20th century, a cross between the Ponderosa and Dwarf Champion tomatoes, introduced to the market by S. M. Isbell & Co. in 1909. This dwarf variety grows to a height of about 60–90 cm, making it ideal for growing in pots, on balconies, and on patios.

The fruits are large, with a slightly flattened, somewhat ribbed shape, and weigh an average of 250–350 g, though they can reach up to half a kilogram. They have an intense, dark pink color with fleshy, juicy pulp and a balanced, sweet-and-tart flavor. New Big Dwarf is exceptionally productive for a dwarf variety, and the first fruits ripen about 65–70 days after planting.

The plant has strong stems, but it is advisable to support the branches due to the weight of the fruit. This variety does not require extensive pruning, aside from removing excess leaves to prevent the bush from becoming too dense.

It is an excellent choice for gardeners with limited space who are looking for tomatoes with large fruits and great flavor.

Large fruits on a small plant are no accident here: that was precisely the goal of crossing Ponderosa with Dwarf Champion. The story of New Big Dwarf later inspired the international Dwarf Tomato Project, which develops compact tomato varieties with diverse fruit types.
