Root System Development
Root system development begins as early as germination and continues throughout the plant’s growth period. A strong root system enables efficient uptake of water and nutrients and increases tomatoes’ resistance to periodic water shortages. Restricted root development almost always leads to stunted growth of the above-ground parts. Well-drained soil, a sufficiently large container, and watering without prolonged waterlogging of the root ball all promote healthy root development.
