Positive selection

Positive selection involves choosing the best plants for further propagation. Healthy plants that are typical of the variety, produce high yields, and bear high-quality fruit are selected for seed production. In an established variety, this practice serves primarily to preserve its typical characteristics. A lasting improvement in the population is possible only if the selected traits are heritable and are confirmed in subsequent generations.
