Natural crossing
Also known as: cross-pollination
Natural cross-pollination occurs when pollen from one variety is transferred to the flower of another variety by insects or the wind. For most tomatoes, the risk of such pollination is low because they are self-pollinating plants. The exception is varieties with an elongated style that extends beyond the anther cone, in which the percentage of natural cross-pollination can be significantly higher. If nasiona are to maintain varietal purity, the selected buds should be covered and labeled before they open.
