Leaf Removal

Leaf removal is a maintenance practice whose scope depends on the growth habit, training method, and growing conditions. Primarily, old, diseased, soil-touching, or excessively dense leaves are gradually removed. In tall-growing varieties, this improves airflow, while self-terminating varieties require much more careful pruning. Removing leaves too aggressively limits photosynthesis and can expose the fruit to sunscald.
