A gene is the basic unit of genetic information encoded in DNA. It contains the instructions needed to produce a specific protein or regulate processes occurring within plant cells. It is genes that determine traits such as fruit color, size, taste, disease resistance, and growth habit. Each tomato variety has its own unique combination of thousands of genes.
