Fruit Reduction

Fruit thinning involves removing some of the young fruit set to improve the quality of the remaining tomatoes. This practice is mainly used for large-fruited varieties, where leaving too many fruits leads to smaller fruit size. Thanks to thinning, the plant directs more assimilates to a smaller number of fruits, which achieve greater weight and better quality. It is not routinely performed on every variety; however, in the case of an overloaded cluster of a large-fruited variety, it is best to remove the weakest or damaged fruit set early on.
