Ecotype

An ecotype is a genetically distinct population within a species, shaped by local environmental conditions such as climate or soil. It may be better adapted to its place of origin due to the effects of natural selection. An ecotype is not synonymous with a cultivated variety or a local variety, although these concepts may overlap to some extent. The conservation of local populations is of great importance for the protection of biodiversity.
