Dwarf (dwarf tomato)

Dwarf tomatoes are a group of compact-growing varieties that were known long before the modern Dwarf Tomato Project was established. Varieties such as Dwarf Champion and New Big Dwarf were already being grown at the turn of the XIX and XX centuries. An international project initiated by Craig LeHoulliera and Patrina Nuske Small in late 2005 significantly expanded this group, combining the diversity of heirloom varieties with the small size of plants suitable for growing in small gardens, on balconies, and in containers.

Dwarf-type plants are characterized by a compact, stocky habit, a very thick and exceptionally stiff stem, and short internodes. The leaves are dark green, thick, and heavily wrinkled (rugose); they may be of the regular leaf (RL) or potato leaf (PL) type. Most varieties reach a height of 60 to 140 cm, while maintaining a fruiting pattern similar to that of tall-growing varieties—they grow and produce fruit for most of the season, rather than just for a short period, as is the case with many self-terminating varieties.

The greatest advantage of Dwarf tomatoes is their combination of compact size with fruit that rivals the quality of the best heirloom varieties. This group includes fruits of nearly all known types—from cherry tomatoes to large beefsteak tomatoes—in almost every color: red, pink, yellow, orange, green, brown, purple, striped, and bicolor. You can find varieties with a sweet, dessert-like flavor as well as those with the rich, classic aroma of heirloom varieties.

Unlike most tall-growing tomato varieties, Dwarf tomatoes usually do not require systematic removal of side shoots (suckers). Excessive pruning or breaking off shoots can even significantly reduce their yield. It is best to manage them with minimal pruning, providing only solid support for the heavy fruit.

Dwarf tomatoes are currently one of the fastest-growing groups of heirloom varieties and are an excellent choice for those with limited space who do not want to compromise on exceptional flavor and a wide variety of fruits.
