Fred’s Tie-Dye is a tomato variety developed as part of the Dwarf Tomato Project, introduced to the market in 2015. Bred from a cross between Dwarf Wild Fred and Pink Berkeley Tie-Dye, it is characterized by medium to large fruits with an extremely attractive appearance. Ripe fruits are dark pink or purple, with characteristic green-gold stripes. The flesh is dark red, typical of the so-called “black tomatoes”, which gives the fruits an intense, rich flavor with a slight hint of acidity.
The plants are dwarf (growing to about 90-120 cm), but despite their small height, they are very productive. The fruit weighs between 170 and 300 grams, and its full flavor makes it perfect for eating raw, in salads, and for preserves. Fred’s Tie-Dye is a mid-early variety that ripens in about 75 days after planting. Its compact shape makes it perfect for growing in pots or smaller garden spaces, requiring only lateral support.
