This dark pink, beefsteak-type fruit, which can weigh up to half a kilogram, grows on a plant with potato-like leaves. The variety is often compared to
Brandywine, though its fruits are smaller than those from
Brandywine and its yields are higher. The fruit is very aromatic, with a delicate skin, and ripens about 80 days after being transplanted in the ground. The plants are tall and require staking.
The history of “Stump of the World” is linked to collector Ben Quisenberry of Ohio. Craig LeHoullier has been preserving and describing it since the early 1990s, highlighting its particularly good flavor. Its potato-like foliage and pink fruit make it a recognizable classic in the collection.
