According to records preserved in catalogs, Mrs. Maxwell of Mexico, Missouri, received seeds from a friend in Italy. This variety underwent a selection process lasting about 30 years, during which the earliest and largest fruits were selected each year for subsequent plantings. The plants are tall, with potato leaves and thick stems, and require staking. The fruits are large, weighing up to 700 grams; they are dark pink and very fleshy, with excellent flavor and a very pleasant aroma. The fruits reach maturity approximately 70 days after being planted in the ground.
