German Pink holds a special place in the history of preserving heirloom varieties. The seeds belonged to the Ott family; Michael Ott brought them from Germany to the United States in 1883. They later came into the possession of Diane Ott Whealy. In 1975, “German Pink” and the morning glory “Grandpa Ott’s” were the two heirloom varieties that marked the beginning of the Seed Savers Exchange.
This robust plant with potato-like leaves produces large quantities of beautiful, deep pink, slightly flattened fruits weighing between 500 and 1,000 grams. An excellent tomato for sandwiches, cooking, and canning. The fruit ripens about 75 days after transplanting.
