German Gold is a large tomato with a warm, golden-yellow hue that often takes on an orange tint. Ripe fruits may develop a red blush, and their fleshy interior invites you to cut them into thick slices. The flavor is mild and fruity-sweet, pairing well with salads featuring mild cheese and fresh herbs.
This variety is preserved in collections of heirloom tomatoes, also under the name “Allemande Dorée.” Its strength lies in the combination of large fruit and a light color—on a platter, it pairs easily with pink, red, or dark varieties.
This variety is ideal for a warm growing location and the later part of the season. The large fruits, which—according to our description—can reach about one kilogram under favorable conditions, require sturdy support for the clusters. If you’re looking for a similar play on warm colors, compare it to “Armenian.”
