Old German was preserved by a Mennonite family from the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. The Southern Exposure Seed Exchange introduced it to the market in 1985. It is an heirloom tomato whose history traces back through the gardens of Virginia, despite the German-sounding name. The fruits are large, weighing up to one kilogram. The skin is thin. When cut open, they are very eye-catching with their mix of golden and red colors. The fruits are irregularly shaped and slightly flattened. They reach maturity about 85 days after transplanting. The plant grows tall and requires staking or tying up.
