Rose de Berne has long been associated with Swiss gardens and is considered a classic heirloom variety. This tomato is distinguished by its exceptionally flavorful, sweet-and-spicy fruit with a thin, pinkish-red skin. The fruits are medium-sized, typically weighing between 120 and 200 grams, making them an excellent choice for both salads and eating raw. This variety is prized for its uniform fruit size, high yield, and delicate, well-balanced flavor.

Rose de Berne plants are tall and require staking or trellising; their fruit ripens about 75 days after transplanting, placing them in the medium-late category. Although this variety is easy to grow in greenhouses, it may be more sensitive to rain when grown outdoors, which makes it prefer more sheltered locations.

The Swiss organization ProSpecieRara has recorded the presence of “Rose de Berne” on the market since 1957. In its collection, the variety is designated GE-1230. Its thin skin and very juicy flesh are part of its charm; protection from rain helps keep the fruit in good condition.
