The fruit is just as fleshy and large as in the red variety (Ponderosa Red). It is golden-yellow in color, with a delicate skin and a pleasant, balanced flavor—not too tart, with a noticeable sweetness. The fruit is flattened and easily reaches a weight of 450 grams or more. It was first introduced to the market in 1914 by Peter Henderson & Co. The fruit reaches maturity approximately 75 days after transplanting. The plant is tall and requires staking or tying up.
In the 1928 Peter Henderson & Co. catalog, Golden Ponderosa is described as a yellow variety selected from Ponderosa and introduced in 1914. Its advertisement can be viewed in the original Henderson catalog. This is a rare instance where we can verify the date and the relationship between varieties in an old publication and then see the results in our own garden.
