The fruits weigh up to 900 grams; they are a vivid yellow-orange with distinct red streaks of varying intensity. They are sweet and juicy, with a distinct hint of acidity. In collections, it is described as a variety with 19th-century roots. The fruits reach maturity about 85 days after planting.
Mammoth German Gold is one of the varieties preserved in the Heirloom Seed Project at the Landis Valley Museum in Pennsylvania. According to project director Joanne Ranck-Dirks, it was already being grown there in the early 1980s. Its multicolored fruit is part of a living collection of historic crop plants.
