One of the best tomatoes in terms of yield and excellent flavor. A unique, tall-growing tomato with bullhorn-shaped fruit. An exceptional “paste” tomato (it contains a very high dry matter content, similar to
Lima) suitable not only for processing but also for fresh consumption. It is extremely tasty and aromatic. The fruits are large, 10–15 cm long, weighing 180–300 grams, and can even reach 0.5 kg; they contain a high amount of dry matter. Very high yield per plant. Suitable for both open-field and protected cultivation, though it performs better under cover.
Opalka has Polish roots. According to a story told to Carolyn Male by Carl Swidorski, the seeds originated in Poland around 1900. Male helped popularize this variety among collectors. Its delicate, pendulous foliage is a characteristic also described by seed savers.
