Black Cherry combines the convenience of a cherry tomato with the rich flavor associated with dark varieties. The round fruits, about 2โ2.5 cm in diameter, ripen to a cherry-brown color. They are juicy and sweet, yet have enough character to hold their own in a salad with stronger cheeses or herbs.
The variety was bred by Vince Sapp of Tomato Growers Supply and introduced to the market in 2003. It demonstrates that even a newer variety can quickly become a classic in the gardens of cherry tomato enthusiasts.
The vigorous, tall plants require stakes and space for new clusters of fruit. They can bear fruit until the cool weather of autumn. This is a good choice for harvesting small batches as needed. In a bowl, it contrasts beautifully with the light-colored White Cherry, and if you prefer dark, plum-shaped fruits, check out Black Plum.
