Stem hair

The tomato stem is covered with numerous hairs that serve a protective function and reduce water loss. Some of these are glandular hairs that secrete substances that emit odors or repel certain pests. Adventitious roots do not develop from the hairs, but from the internal tissues of the stem. High humidity or contact between the shoot and moist soil can stimulate their formation, which is why they sometimes grow among the hairs.
