Seed Disinfection

Seed disinfection is a treatment performed before sowing to reduce the number of pathogens present on the seed surface and, when appropriate methods are used, also beneath the seed coat or inside nasiona. It can reduce the risk of transmitting certain bacterial and fungal diseases, as well as some mechanically transmitted viruses. Surface-active agents and heat treatment have varying scopes of effectiveness. The method should be selected based on the pathogen, seed species, and seed lot, as there is no single method that guarantees the complete elimination of all diseases. The treatment should be performed according to a proven procedure, as improper timing, temperature, or concentration can reduce seed germination capacity.
