Pathotype

A pathotype is a group of strains of the same pathogen that differ in their ability to overcome the resistance of specific tomato varieties. Knowledge of pathotypes is crucial in the breeding of resistant varieties and in interpreting resistance labels on seed packages. When selecting a variety, one should check not only the name of the disease but also the race or pathotype covered by the declared resistance.
