Mutation

A mutation is a permanent change in genetic material. Most mutations do not cause visible changes or are detrimental to the plant, but some lead to the development of new, valuable traits. Many well-known tomato varieties were developed precisely because of spontaneous mutations, which were then stabilized by breeders.
