Mole crickets

Also known as: soil gnatspotted plant gnats

Fungus gnats are small, dark flies that most commonly appear around the moist growing medium used for producing seedlings. Adults are mainly a nuisance, while the larvae live in the growing medium, feeding on fungi and decaying matter; when present in large numbers, they can damage the delicate roots of seedlings. Their development is favored by a constantly wet soil surface. Control measures primarily involve avoiding overwatering, maintaining good hygiene, and monitoring adults using yellow sticky traps.
