Collection of assimilates

Assimilates produced during photosynthesis are transported to areas of intensive growth and to developing fruit. Adequate accumulation of assimilates determines the size, flavor, and quality of the crop. Any damage to the leaves, lack of light, or severe disease infestation limits the production of assimilates and thus reduces yield potential. Therefore, it is important to protect healthy leaves, ensure they receive adequate light, and avoid removing more leaves than is necessary for air circulation or plant health.
