Auriga produces round, orange fruits with an aromatic, fruity flavor. They are easy to slice for sandwiches and salads. According to the growers’ descriptions, the fruits weigh about 75 g, and the plants grow to about 1.5 m and require staking. This variety is suitable for open-ground cultivation.
It is a piece of German vegetable breeding history: VERN, an association dedicated to preserving heirloom varieties, attributes it to Martin Stein of the Breeding Institute in Quedlinburg and notes its approval in 1980. The orange “Auriga” survived in gardens even after the disappearance of the country where it was bred—the former GDR.
