A very interesting cross between the ‘
Brad’s Atomic Grape’ and ‘Orange Roma’ varieties. From the former, it inherited its indigo color and distinct marbling; from the latter, its firmness and resistance to shipping damage. Add to that its sweetness and high yield, and you have the perfect ornamental tomato. Great for snacks, sweet and juicy, and aesthetically pleasing to boot. That’s the
Atomic Sunset. The fruits are small, up to 50 grams—slightly larger than typical grape tomatoes. They ripen early in the season. The plant is tall, though it doesn’t tend to overgrow the tunnel—by the end of the season, it’s unlikely to exceed 150 cm in height. The leaves are regular in shape.
The variety was bred by Brad Gates at Wild Boar Farms. The breeder notes the long shelf life of ripe fruit after harvest, which sets it apart from other small snack tomatoes. Ripeness should be assessed once the lighter part of the fruit has fully colored; the dark pigment of the skin alone does not yet indicate ripeness.
