An excellent variety developed at the University of Wisconsin. The fruit is very large, deep pink, and highly resistant to cracking and (importantly, on certain soil types) blossom-end rot; they ripen evenly within the clusters, have a tough skin, and firm flesh. Very high resistance to physiological disorders. Additional fertilization may be required to achieve maximum yield.
Wisconsin 55 is associated with public breeding conducted at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. A list of varieties compiled by John W. Scott records it under the year 1947 and cites John Baer, Del Monte, Early Biltmore, and Redskin in its ancestry. This is a tomato from a time when new varieties were also developed with the regional needs of gardeners and growers in mind.
