Originating in Italy, this highly prized variety of oxheart tomato produces enormous fruits that can reach up to 14 cm in diameter. They are covered with a very delicate skin and have delicious, velvety flesh. It pleasantly surprises not only with the size of the fruit but also with its fantastic flavor. A late-season variety; fruiting begins about 90 days after transplanting. The plants are tall and require staking or tying to supports.
The Sand Hill Preservation Center preserves “Provenzano” as an heirloom variety brought from Italy. There, the large, meaty fruits belong to the group of tomatoes used for thick preserves—a good complement to their use as fresh produce.
