Eva Purple Ball

According to the history preserved by Joe Bratka’s family, “Eva Purple Ball ” originates from the Black Forest in Germany and was already being grown as early as the late 19th century. Southern Exposure Seed Exchange introduced it to its catalog in 1994 using seeds provided by Carolyn Male and Craig LeHoullier. It is a mid-early variety whose fruit ripens about 70–80 days after transplanting.

The plant is a tall variety, meaning it grows continuously throughout the season and requires staking. The fruits are smooth, round, dark pink or purple-pink, weighing 140–200 grams, and free of discoloration and blemishes, making them very visually appealing. They are also resistant to cracking and have thin skin, making them easy to peel. The flavor is delicious, well-balanced, sweet with a slight tartness.

The variety is valued for its plant health and high yield, even in hot, humid climates. It is versatile—perfect for salads, preserves, and eating raw.
